Candy Sprinkles

Candy sprinkles are tiny, decorative confectionery items used to add color and texture to desserts like cakes, cupcakes, and ice cream. Their origin is often attributed to French bakers in the 18th century, where they were known as "nonpareils." Modern sprinkles are typically made from sugar, corn syrup, cornstarch, wax, and artificial colors and flavors. The Dutch introduced "hagelslag" (chocolate sprinkles) in 1913, often eaten on bread. In the US, elongated sprinkles are sometimes called "jimmies," a term with uncertain origins but popularized in the early 20th century.
