Nonpareils

Nonpareils is French for "without equal," are tiny, spherical sugar candies often used for decoration. Their origins trace back to 17th-century France, initially as colorless sugar toppings for elaborate confections. By the 18th and 19th centuries, colored nonpareils became popular, adorning everything from wedding cakes to everyday desserts. The distinct textural contrast they offer – a delicate crunch against a smoother base, typically chocolate – is a key appeal. They are still widely used today, often found on chocolate disks (also called nonpareils, or "Sno-Caps" in some regions) and as a decorative element on baked goods, providing both visual appeal and a satisfying textural bite.
