After moving to the U.S., he continued his passion for confectionery, initially distributing novelty whistles to build a network. His breakthrough came by importing premium black licorice from Holland, which gained national recognition, even being featured in The Washington Post. Today, Gerrit J. Verburg Co. is known for sourcing and distributing a diverse range of international candies, including their own "Gerrit's Originals" and the nostalgic "Vintage Gums" line, which resurrected iconic American chewing gums like Beemans, Black Jack, and Clove.
