Charleston Chew, the iconic nougat bar covered in chocolatey coating, first delighted taste buds in 1922. Created by the Fox-Cross Candy Company, founded by former Shakespearean actor Donley Cross and Charlie Fox, the candy was aptly named after the popular dance craze of the era, the Charleston. While initially only available in vanilla, later flavors like chocolate and strawberry were introduced. A unique aspect often promoted by the brand, especially after Nathan Sloane acquired the company in 1957, was the suggestion to freeze the bar and then "smack it" to break it into bite-sized, crunchy pieces – a beloved tradition for many fans. Today, Charleston Chew is part of the Tootsie Roll Industries family.
