Gumballs were surprisingly not the first vending candy. Vending machines for stick gum appeared around 1888. The spherical, candy-coated gumball, as we know it, and the machines designed to dispense them, weren't widely seen until 1907, likely introduced by the Thomas Adams Gum Company in the U.S. These captivating treats, often with a hard shell and chewy center, quickly became a popular penny candy, enchanting children and adding a playful element to stores and public spaces.
