Napoleon Candy has a surprisingly imperial history, though it's a Belgian brand, not French. Founded in 1912 by baker Louis Janssens in Antwerp, the brand's name was inspired by a friendly chocolatier who had named his new praline "Caesar." Not to be outdone, Janssens declared he would name his new candy "Napoleon." The candy, a hard, round sweet with a surprising, sweet or sour powder center, became an instant success. For over a century, Napoleon has maintained its unique recipe and individually wrapped style, becoming a beloved staple in Belgium and the Netherlands.
