Joyva’s rich history began in 1907 when founder Nathan Radutzky, a Jewish immigrant from Kyiv, Ukraine, started selling homemade halvah from a pushcart on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. This old-world sesame confection proved popular, leading him to establish Independent Halvah and Candies, Inc., which built its current factory in Brooklyn in 1931, where it still operates today. The brand was officially introduced in 1951, a portmanteau of halvah and his granddaughter’s name, Roslyn Joy.
