Dum Dums Lollipops, first introduced in 1924 by the Akron Candy Company, earned their catchy name from sales manager I.C. Bahr, who believed "Dum Dums" would be easy for children to remember and request. Originally, there were seven flavors: lemon, lime, orange, coconut-pineapple, cherry, grape, and butterscotch. In 1953, Spangler Candy Company acquired Dum Dums and moved production to Bryan, Ohio, significantly boosting both marketing and output. Today, these iconic lollipops are produced at a rate of approximately 12 million per day, with 16 distinct flavors plus the intriguing "Mystery Flavor," a blend created when different flavors run together during production. A key appeal of Dum Dums is their commitment to being free of the most common food allergens, including peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat, sesame, and gluten, and they are also OU Kosher certified, making them a widely accessible treat.
