Whoppers in Bulk
Whoppers offer a distinctive crunch and flavor profile rooted in early twentieth-century soda fountain culture. Rather than a solid chocolate center, each piece features a light, aerated malted milk center surrounded by a smooth chocolatey coating. The underlying recipe relies on malted milk powder, a mixture invented in the late nineteenth century by William Horlick as a nutritious dietary supplement before it became a popular confectionary staple.
Malted milk powder was originally created in 1873 in Racine, Wisconsin, as an easily digestible infant food and dietary supplement. Explorers, including Admiral Richard E. Byrd, carried malted milk powder on polar expeditions because it was lightweight, non-perishable, and energy-dense.
The candy was first introduced in 1939 under the name Giants by the Overland Candy Company. It was rebranded as Whoppers in 1949 after a company merger.
The key malted flavor comes from barley malt and wheat flour combined with evaporated whole milk, which undergoes a specialized cooking and drying process to create the characteristic porous texture.
Whoppers have maintained a constant presence in American movie theaters, concession stands, and holiday candy bowls for over eight decades. The distinct milk carton packaging, introduced in the mid-twentieth century, remains an iconic staple of any retro candy selection. Their enduring popularity stems from the unique contrast between the crunchy malt core and the sweet coating, making them a mainstay in the Hershey product lineup .
