Heart Candy

Heart candy most commonly refers to conversation hearts, a popular Valentine's Day candy. These small, chalky, heart-shaped candies are imprinted with short messages like "BE MINE" or "KISS ME." Their origin traces back to 1847 when Boston pharmacist Oliver Chase invented a machine to cut lozenges. His brother, Daniel Chase, later adapted this technology in 1866 to press words onto larger, non-heart-shaped candies called "motto lozenges" using vegetable dye. The iconic heart shape appeared in 1901. Annually, billions of these candies are produced, with manufacturing often beginning almost a year in advance to meet demand.
