Swedish Fish, a distinctively chewy, fish-shaped candy, first swam onto the scene in the late 1950s. While commonly found in North America today, these iconic treats were originally developed by the Swedish confectionery company Malaco. Malaco created them specifically for the U.S. market, aiming to introduce a candy that would resonate with American consumers while subtly referencing Sweden's significant fishing industry. Each candy piece even has "Swedish" embossed on its side. Although Malaco still distributes them in Sweden (where they're known as "pastellfiskar"), the North American distribution is now handled by Mondelēz International, making Swedish Fish a globally recognized symbol of chewy, fruity sweetness.
