Pop Rocks

Pop Rocks, the original popping candy, was actually a happy accident. Chemist William A. Mitchell invented the concept in 1956 for General Foods while attempting to develop an instant carbonated soft drink powder. The candy, made by trapping carbon dioxide gas inside sugar crystals, wasn't released until 1976. Despite being extensively tested and deemed safe, a persistent urban legend spread throughout the late 1970s that mixing Pop Rocks with soda would cause a person's stomach to explode, leading to a massive public relations challenge that General Foods attempted to counter with hotlines and full-page ads before discontinuing the product in 1983.
