Jolly Rancher began in 1949 as an ice cream shop in Golden, Colorado, founded by Bill and Dorothy Harmsen. When harsh winters hurt ice cream sales, the Harmsens pivoted, launching a line of bulk and boxed chocolates and their own hard candies, including the popular cinnamon taffy, Fire Stix. They chose the name Jolly Rancher to evoke a friendly, Western company. After successfully expanding their hard candy line with intense fruit flavors like Watermelon, the company was sold in 1966. It was eventually acquired by The Hershey Company in 1996.
