In 1896, Leo Hirshfield named the Tootsie Roll after his daughter, Clara "Tootsie" Hirshfield. Tootsie Rolls were used as WW2 field rations for their portability and high melting point. This nostalgic candy was popular with dust bowl refugees due to the low price.
